Flexible working to help cope with strain of riots

Introducing flexible working could help businesses and employees cope with the difficulties caused by the riots, according to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

The CIPD head of public policy, Ben Willmott, urged businesses to take into consideration employees’ safety if they were commuting from troubled areas. A reasonable option that could work in some jobs would be to allow employees to work from home. Of course this depends on the type of work.

The CIPD is seeking to bring about flexible working options that would allow everyone the right to request flexible working conditions. Not just during riots, but in everyday life.

This would of course require careful legislating, because not all employers can be painted with the same brush when it comes to introducing policy.
